Biodiverse-friendly Garden Design Studio

Gardens have long been the aesthetic and technical laboratory of landscape architecture. In a climate of wet-dry extremes and long hot summers, this studio will invite you to consider the contextual, design and ecological considerations of designing with plants in southwest Australia, one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots. Students will demonstrate a contextually appropriate garden concept, a manifestation of poetic ideas utilising a palette of plants and materials, and a set of presentation images which communicate the intent.

Computing in the Real World: An Introduction to Computer Science without Computers

This micro-credential course offers an in-depth exploration of core computer science concepts. Over two weeks, a combination of lectures and hands-on activities will be provided to cover the topics including understanding, designing and analysing algorithms. By the end of the program, you’ll have gained a solid foundation in computer science and be inspired to continue learning about this fascinating field.

Introduction to Australian Business and Commercial Law
Professional Development Points: 2 or 3
This micro-credential course provides students with an overview of the Australian Legal and Political System and the fundamental principles of Australian Business and Commercial Law. Topics covered include the Australian legal system; the doctrine of precedent, the principles of statutory interpretation, the law of torts – with a particular emphasis on tortious liability for professional negligence, the law of contract, consumer protection law and the principles of equity – with a particular emphasis on the law of fiduciary obligations.

Both courses will focus on regression analysis, probability and statistics in finance, and machine learning. Introduction to Engineering Design

Engineering design is about creativity, technical expertise and teamwork. In this unit, students undertake project works to learn about engineering design and how to develop, implement and assess engineering solutions. Students attend immersive full-day face-to-face workshops in which they learn about and apply engineering design processes. They work in teams on a number of design challenges and present their findings via a video, oral presentation and written report.

Summer Garden Design Studio: Design for Wellbeing

The Summer Garden Studio is a micro-credential program set in the Swan Coastal Plain landscape of Perth, Western Australia, that explores the relationship between landscape design, well-being, and environmental resilience. Centered on the creation of a summer garden, the course guides participants through developing a design concept and plant palette that promote health and well-being. Participants will examine the historical role of gardens as both creative and technical testing grounds for landscape architecture, while addressing the environmental challenges of designing in a region known for wet-dry extremes and intense summer heat.

Sustainable Energy Technology

This micro-credential course explores the engineering definition of sustainability, as applied to the diverse landscape of conventional and emerging energy resources. From the thermodynamic origins of energy to the economic, environmental, and societal constraints on its storage and use. During this course you will explore the use of engineering technologies to maintain and grow global prosperity, including renewable energy storage, carbon capture, and the yet unrealised potential of large-scale automation and machine learning.

Participants must be 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate students who have enrolled in an engineering course in their home country.
Winter School Study Program for Medical and Health Sciences*
Professional Development Points: 6
The Winter School Study Program was established in 2010, with the objective of offering international students studying to be health professionals, an opportunity to experience the Australian health care system, together with medical research methodology, research ethics, and scientific writing skills. This program as a duration of four weeks, consisting of one week of lectures and workshops (Part 1) and three weeks of coursework or research (Part 2). In addition, students may access to online undergraduate health science lectures at UWA.
* This program is only offered to UWA partner universities.
This program is only available in July and August.
